Gator Cagers shake off slow start to top Stetson 71-48

Sophomore forward Marreese Speights scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the young Gator team to it’s sixth win of the season over Stetson Tuesday night at the O’Connell center .   His team down early 10-1, coach Billy Donovan pulled four starters in an attempt to motivate the team.   A subsequent 14-0 run put the Gators back in the lead for good.  At six and one the Gators are not ranked in the top 25, and lost their most recent previous game against FSU last Friday.

Looks like a complete rebuilding year to me when you lose so badly to FSU, only managing a little more than 50 points in the loss.   No wonder Donovan nearly bolted for the NBA after saying goodbye to “The ’04’s”, and Senior Chris Richard, who all left school after last season’s second consecutive National Championship.   Hopefully the talent will respond to the system, and the losses of excellent assistant coaches to head coaching jobs elsewhere won’t show too much.   Next up for the young team is Vermont, who visits the O’Dome this Friday.
